Chronicle Movie review

with one comment

Three teens receive super powers and deal with social issues and problems in their daily lives.  This film is from mostly the perspective of Andrew a bullied high student with an abusive father and a dying mother.  We then have Matt, Andrew’s cousin as Andrew’s only friend who tries to help Andrew deal with the problems but with no avail.  And last but not least Steve the school’s upcoming president and star quarter back.

All three discover a strange rock and gain telekinetic powers from it.  The film relies on the documentary look as Andrew buys a camera and starts filming everything.  While this does seem like a cheap tactic it does act as something more by the end.  Also this adds to the alienation of Andrew by everyone as we see what Andrew sees literally.  Many of the dialogue only happen between Andrew, Matt, Steve and Andrew’s parents.

The term superhero is never said.  Rather this is not a superhero film it’s a film about teenagers learning to become adults.  Learning how to deal or not with life’s many problems.  Andrew’s camera becomes a clutch for him as it’s the only way he can really “talk” with anyone.  And this point is even clearer later in the middle when the camera shifts to Matt holding it.  This I will explain later in another post after people have watched the film.

All in all this film is more than science fiction is about discovery, life and death.  The main characters struggle with the problems of social norms and our ever changing views.  Go see this film as this is one of the most important films of the year.
