Dark Souls review

leave a comment »

Hey it’s that time again.  I have a lot on my plate this time a year thanks to a good 4th quarter picking up old games in the bundles, Uncharted 1&2 and the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.  Also internships suck.  I know that they can be rewarding and lead to a job but they just suck.  You are treated as the lowest of life and are expected to be the best of what they want you to do.  How is that thought process even being to work?  I had better experiences working for retail then the internship I am doing.  Even if it was paid I don’t think it would alleviate the pain.  Anyway let’s move on to an even bigger pain Dark Souls.

Don’t get me wrong I do like the game.  They also made it slightly easier then Demon’s souls.  But the game is just so very hard.   There is no sense of direction to the path in the game.  You can skip bosses and levels entirely if you choose to.  And by accident since a lot of the areas have very little light.  You can barely tell what is what in the game.  But that’s the point since it tries to play on the scare tactics and surprise attacks.  I like that you are given freedom to go thru certain events in any order really.  But left with no direction I felt lost which the designers could be going for but for me there should be some direction.

The graphics are of course amazing.  The armor and weapons look great once you put them on the effects of fire and others look amazing and deadly since they can and will kill you.  Loading times aren’t as bad.  The cut scenes are pretty and nice to look at.

Game play is the same as Demons souls.  No real difference as the controls is pretty much the same and the play style is the same.  I guess if it works the first time don’t change it right?  I will say that bringing the fire element does change the way characters are built and adds to the character development.

The bosses like in the previous game are just as hard, but are easy once you get the hang of their attack patterns.  The bonfires are a nice little inclusion which is check points so you don’t have to start from the beginning.  But the levels are longer as a result.  This is good and bad but gives the player a better time than say starting from the beginning again and again.

The NPCs are helpful and cryptic at times.  Human from and undead from aren’t as important since they only have the difference of summoning other characters.  You can also summon other NPCs during boss fights to help.

Overall it is a very long game, a long and difficult task of endless undead and demons.  But if you can come on top it is worth it: The feeling of accomplishment which very few games can give you.   I give it a buy it now but if you are the type that quits easily then I advise the latter since the game will disappoint many many times.

PSP vita !!

leave a comment »

Ok so now we have a name instead of the PSP2.  Vita doesn’t really match this portable.  But whatever it’s just a name.  The price like I wrote before will be 249-299 respectively for the wifi and 3G version.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Vita  no other information about how much the 3G version costs per month yet.  Also a big plus is that the console will be region free.  Something the 3DS does not have.  Strange since it was the other way around.

Now will Vita bring the life back to Sony as it was intended to do?  First release games much like what happened to the 3DS will affect the growth of the system.

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/40502/playstation-vita-launch-games-lineup should this information stay on date the new uncharted game will make this system a big contender.  The others aren’t as nearly as popular.  But with a big name upon release date the system should get more sales.  The 3DS didn’t achieve this by getting the big hits late, which had some factors to the price cut.

The 3G option: I don’t know what to say about this one.  One hand this could help since Sony made this a semi-tablet.  Which will appeal to other customers for an affordable wanna be tablet?  On the other hand this could be a disaster depending on the cost of the plan people might not want to hand over extra money for a portable system.  Apple gets away with it since their Ipad can do other things and has a bigger screen.  While Sony is trying to climb the apple tree of success it might have missed the point with putting all those features on a primarily based game system.

The vita is a portable gaming system first.  That should have been the mind set when going into it.  By adding tons of features that may not have an effect on the games could effectively ruin the system.   Trying to reach other customers will alienate the ones you have.

My predictions is if the release date games are a hit like Uncharted then the Vita will indeed have a better shelf life then the 3DS.  But if some problems arise and should some setbacks cause the Vita to be lack luster then Sony is going to have to slash some prices.  If Sony doesn’t learn from Nintendo’s mistakes then it will follow and history might repeat itself.

On a side note Microsoft is doing the smart move by staying out and letting them fight it out.  But who knows what they can bring to the table turn holiday shopping time.  Hindsight is 20/20.

Catherine and other stuff

leave a comment »

Wow it’s been a while again.  Since my last article recent events really put me down and I didn’t really feel like writing or doing anything for a while.  There were also pretty lame game releases lately with the exception of Catherine.  The drastic price cut of the 3DS was a big surprise.  I wouldn’t say that the handheld was failing but the late releasing of good games definitely hurt the console.  The PSP vita doesn’t seem to be showing its face at all.  But the pricing of it of 249, and 299 was also surprising: http://psp.ign.com/articles/117/1173228p1.html.  At that price Sony has a better chance to compete with the 3DS during the holiday rush.  But then again the price cut does push the 3DS into more affordable homes now.  170 for it seem more reasonable.  249-299 Vita feels like they should just pick up a PS3 if they haven’t already.  Speaking of that the PS3 is now 249 http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/08/sony-announces-ps3-price-cut-in-all-territories-on-both-ps3-models.ars.

Microsoft’s xbox360 hasn’t really done anything.  It would seem that they are just letting Sony and Nintendo do battle and wait for the exhausted winner.  OK enough about the consoles let’s talk about Catherine:

Now Catherine is a very unique game about love and life.  It is a linear narrative about Vincent a young man dealing with the problems of relationships.  Now the player takes control during conversations and the puzzle platform modes.  You make choices which affect the outcome of the game and see the impending doom of Vincent as he tries to figure out cheating.

The animated visual cut scenes are nice to look at and the graphics during game play are visually stunning.  The story gets a little crazy at times but as it was said and done I still wanted more.  This game really is a metaphor for life.

The game play is just Vincent climbing up boxes which he can push and pull.  The objective is to climb to the top as fast as you can without knocking down the boxes below you.  It’s very simple at first but the game will challenge you with hard and harder level designs.

Overall I really enjoyed it.  The story with this unique game play makes for one crazy and enjoyable experience.  If you like puzzle platformers then look no further there are more challenge modes even after the game is done, also a good narrative to top it off.

Mass Effect

leave a comment »

Mass effect

For comparison sake this game is like fallout in space.  Which in this case a good thing?  A rich but generic story: you a human space solider who after surviving the horrors of war are tasked to save the universe from an impending doom.  You recruit cool and sexy aliens to help you and have to use your wits and your gun to solve various tasks and problems.  Also like a certain show called “firefly” you find out about the Reapers who are a cosmic threat to all life and have to stop them.  In Mass Effect the Reapers are a race of giant ghost ships with cool and scary powers.

Story: like I said a generic you are chosen to save the universe blah, blah.  But you are in total control of your decisions (most of the times)to do whatever you want to save the universe.  Your decisions affect game play and how the story will progress.  While some elements feel drawn out and predictable the player is given a lot of control and power in the narrative.

Game play:  Third person shooter with RPG elements is the basic core of game play.  You fight in a team of three and use your cool futuristic powers to take down the bad guys.  You can use your standard guns or if you picked to be a different class you can use biotic powers.

Driving levels: some levels make you drive a space buggy around the only problem is that the controls make it seem like you are being pulled by a blind horse.  And some of the physics of the land seem to be upside down.  I remember this one time I hit a pillar or something and the buggy flipped over.  It seems that the weight of the buggy could not overcome the small pillar and weight apparently didn’t matter since it looked like the buggy had the same weight as paper.

Explorer: the game does offer a lot of places to check out.  Letting you go out and walk around really makes the universe feel like a huge place.  But then you run into the end of the level and the feeling is gone.

Items: the items get annoying if you don’t keep up with your inventory.  You get too many items in my opinion.  Buying some items is useless since you probably will find it anyway, many copies too.  So money is pretty useless in this sense, but you can buy some upgrades but they just make things much easier then really help.  I played my first run without buying anything and after playing it with some upgrades it feels as though the items could have been taken out, and the items were just there to make people not whine about how hard the game was.

Problems? The game runs pretty good on the PC.  A few graphic problems here or there but nothing that a good restart didn’t fix.

The Verdict: Story and game play was very fun. I really enjoyed the powers and guns.  Minus the driving parts I think this game is pretty good.  –Buy it.

Shank!

with one comment

Shank is an action 2D platform game of revenge.  You play the character of Shank who is out for blood.  Your boss killed your girlfriend and now you want him and his gang dead.  Mostly a fighting game you also have to traverse detailed platforms.  Fight endless enemies and battle tough bosses.  Shank delivers on the gore and violence.  The cut scenes are handled with great detail and the sound track and design were beautifully done.

The story is pretty generic and predictable but it gives purpose to the characters.  The cut scenes and game play are done in a comic book way: invokes an indie graphic novel.

Controls are pretty solid but at times the mashing of buttons is unresponsive.  But overall the controls are fine.  The different weapons come in to enhance the torture of enemies.  But your primary will always be the Shank of course.

The visual 2D side scrolling is very nice to look at.  From every blood splat to explosion the designer took the time to carefully make them noticeable.

The game is a little short.  I find myself wanting more even after the challenging last boss.  But there is a co-op mode which I haven’t got a chance to play because of the lack of a second controller.  This review is only going over the single player campaign.  But from other reviews the co-op mode isn’t very long either.

Repetitive boss fights is a big negative that I can’t look past.  Most of the time the game makes you do some kind of counter or a way to stun the boss in order for you to do real damage.  Not all of the bosses are like this but you can tell that the designer had a similar formula for the bosses.

In the end it was entertaining but a few inconsistent moments led to a bitter taste.  I loved the visual and sounds but the boss fights could have been improved.  I really like the effort of this indie game but I wished that they took longer to adjust the fights.

Verdict: wait for a sale or skip it.

Beat the single player mode and unlocked all the weapons finished in 3 hours.

PSP2 Update 2/15/11

with one comment

Now since the PSP2 is still pretty fresh I won’t really review the specs since the price isn’t even out yet.  But to compare it to the 3DS is hard to say.  What we do know is that the cost will not be 599 from http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/28/sony-says-ngp-will-be-affordable-wont-cost-599-wifi-only-v/

While a joke it does spark fears that this portable console will cost at least an arm.  Predications of the cost could be anywhere from $249 (3DS) up to $400.  At $249-$349 it will give the 3DS a run for its money.  Anything higher might spell doom to Sony like in the past.  Yes the hardware is pretty nice and the games might be cool but costing more than any home gaming console is not worth it.

Release date is still being kept mystery early reports say that it might come out during Christmas 2011.  Sony following the Ipad approach: 3G and Wi-Fi models will be available.  The PSP2 is stated to be able to have 3G nothing is known about the network or if there will be a separate payment plan for the service.

Games on release is not known at all but Uncharted seems to be on the list from the previews and press conference.

Update: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/288712/news/sony-ngp-features-dropped-to-keep-handheld-affordable/?cid=OTC-RSS&attr=CVG-General-RSS

Seems that Sony has decided to cut some features on the PSP2.  Not known which ones but the trade off is that they will make the PSP2 more affordable.  From the article it seems that the cost is close to $250  to $300.  This gives Sony a better position to the 3DS.  Now we just need news of some games.
